Journalism Project
Reflection
In this project for sophomore Humanities, the class studied the importance of Journalism in the world that we know today, as well as how it impacted people in the past. The class started out by reading reports done by distinguished journalism companies such as the New York Times, NPR, and the Wall Street Journal. For a while we were focused on understanding how an article could be well written without biased opinions, and this secretly bleed us into discovering how the media and journalism in particular affects the world and how it can influence people whether they realize it or not. In the, “Understanding Bias,” article by americanpressinstitute.org, they report that journalists sometimes write their own opinions, influencing the public in a multitude of ways. Realizing that many journalists have biased opinions we try to prepare for our final project outcome by understanding our own bias and how we could write an unbiased piece. Our final products were professional reports about subjects that we found interesting to pursue, and we put a lot of work into making them as unbiased as possible. In the end, our articles were compiled onto a website that we could share with our community, and maybe a larger audience.
This project gave me a lot to think upon in the way of journalism, as well as how people believe the news to always be telling the truth. During this project we learned a lot about the media and the bias that it has, and I feel that I will carry this knowledge with me for the rest of my life because it will help me understand the world today from perspectives that may or may not be influential. This project really brought some new perspectives into view for me, mostly about the bias that people hold without realizing, as well as how bias plays a large part in the world, even outside of journalism. During the Bias and Balance seminar, my peers presented their views on the news world and the influence that it has, and this really opened my world to some new ideas that I hadn’t thought of before. One specific comment was by Henry Haggart when he mentioned how much everything that we do is based upon the media, and I thought about this for a while, until finally I realized that it was true and that everyone has a source of influence, whether that be the news, social media, or their parents. I think that coming out of this project has given me a different perspective on life in general, a positive one because I am more informed, and I hope that I can use this knowledge further in my high school career and life outside of school.
Before the start of this journalism project, I had no experience in creating an article about anything that I wanted, as well as how I could make it attractive to read. As I started to write my article, I realized that I was writing it like a report, where it was super boring and simply factual. Creating an article that was interesting to read and was about a subject I enjoyed researching was challenging, but after a while it started to become easier as I worked into the flow of it. As I finished my article, I felt a great sense of accomplishment because it was a new experience for me and I felt as if my article was a work of art, just a different type than I usually create. I think that if I were to do this project over again, I would focus more on making my article super engaging so that I can draw the reader in and really spark their interests. Although I do feel as if my hook was really good because it started as if it was telling a story, “Long ago, before the discovery of electricity, we knew about artificial intelligence. In Greek mythology there were heros made of hammered bronze, steel nails, wielding swords and defending cities, mechanical bulls that functioned by themselves. A Greek inventor, Daedalus or Hephaestus, created artificial intelligence, Talos, a giant automaton made of bronze in order to defend a woman.” Creating something that I was proud of was a real accomplishment for me. Overall I enjoyed this project a lot because it gave me the chance to try something new.
