Who was Frida Kahlo?
Frida Kahlo was a famous Mexican artist who was most commonly known for her self-portraits. She was married to Diego Rivera who was also a famous artist in his day for painting murals. When Frida was a child she lived with her family in Coyoacán which later became her adult home. She was left with a deformity in her leg from polio. When she was a young adult, she was in a relationship with a young man named Alejandro. They did everything together in secret because she was afraid of her parents finding out. One day when they were at the market together, Frida lost her umbrella and they missed their bus looking for it. But the next bus they got on had an inexperienced driver and they ended up in a horrible crash. Frida was left with a bunch of medical problems and pain for most of her life, however when she was recovering she began to pick up painting and drawing leading to her success later in life. Years later she went to a university where she ended up meeting Diego when he was creating a mural for their school. She asked him to critique her work and eventually they began a relationship that lasted a few months. Later in life, Frida separated from because he cheated on her and left her in despair. She lived in her childhood home for a couple of years before suffering from gangrene in her leg, as well as having to wear multiple back braces and corsets. Over the last few years of her life, Frida continued to paint and grow in fame. Upon her last few months, Frida reengaged with Diego, where she lived through the last few days of her life in happiness.
What was the project?
This project was about studying Frida Kahlo's life, her success, and her death, while learning about Mexican culture along the way. For this project we needed to research a person that interested us and write a report about them entirely in Spanish in order to demonstrate our skills in conjugation and word knowledge. For this project, I decided to do Abraham Lincoln as my Frida and I picked him because he was an important figure in American history and there was a lot of information on him, which made writing an essay on him easier than if I had done a family member. Another purpose of this project was to understand show off our skills for all-school exhibition where we showed our families all of the most recent projects, and what we had learned.
How did yours come out, and would you change it if you were to do it over?
I feel that my Frida project came out quite well. I ended up creating a photoshop document of Abraham Lincoln with Frida's features and some symbols from Abrahams life. I feel proud of my finished piece because I put a lot of time into the writing piece as well as the art and I feel that they both reflect that. I feel that my art piece was pretty good and showed a good mix of Abraham and Frida, however if I was to do this again I would probably choose a different Frida painting to base my art off of. I would choose one that could show more of Frida and her side of things. But overall I am proud of how my project turned out. I might also change the order in how we did things, such as doing the writing then the art instead of needing to work on them at the same time.
Dia De Los Muertos Calavera Project
1. Why are Calaveras Literarias traditional at Dia de Los Muertos?
Clavera poems, and stories, and traditional for this festival because Mexican culture is different then our own. In their culture, death is made fun of in a loving way so that the deceased can feel welcomed when they "visit" during the festival. The poems are a part of this process of making fun of skeletons and famous people, and a large influence in the creation of these projects was Jose Guadalupe Posada, who used drawings of skeletons and political figures to make fun of them. He was popular during the early 1900s when he influenced many latin artists because of his satirical acuteness and social engagement.
2. What is my calavera about.
My Calavera Literaria is about a baker who works at Bread. One day, while he is enjoying working, his fingers accidentally get stuck in the dough he was kneading, eventually they pop off. After his fingers fall off, he is super sad because he cannot work anymore and his lovely bread is now crunchy. I think that my story is story was super successful because I created a funny story that was entertaining to read and I also included a pretty sweet drawing of childlike proportions
